Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace have recently secured the "3000-ton KSS-III Modification Development" project, a significant milestone in South Korea's defense industry. Announced on Dec. 20, this project is part of the weapon system modification development support initiative overseen by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).

The KSS-III is a next-generation submarine equipped with a nitrogen-mixed long-life proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) module, which generates electricity through the chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen.

The development of the KSS-III is crucial for submarines to remain submerged for extended periods without the need for external air supply. This is achieved through the air-independent propulsion system (AIPS), which, when utilizing fuel cells, enables more than two weeks of submersion. The AIP system offers higher efficiency with less noise and vibration compared to other air-independent propulsion technologies, making it a superior choice for stealth operations.

Hanwha Ocean, which has the distinction of being the first Korean company to export submarines, leads this project. The company aims to develop a fuel cell system with superior performance compared to advanced competitors and apply it to export submarines, thereby strengthening its competitiveness in the global submarine market. Hanwha Aerospace, leveraging its experience in developing fuel cell systems for aviation, civilian ships, and military unmanned underwater vehicles, plans to develop an independent export-type submarine fuel cell module and secure the original technology.

"We have recently secured the '3000-ton KSS-III Modification Development' project through the weapon system modification development support project overseen by the Defense Acquisition Program Administration," stated representatives from Hanwha Ocean and Hanwha Aerospace.
